We can be our own peace

It occurs to me that in all of us there are two parts.  There is a noisy part and there is a listening part.  The noisy part, as the word suggests, likes to make noise, and so it occupies our attention.

The listening part likes to listen.  It hears the noise.  And it hears the silence.  But unless we pay attention to the listening part, we have no choice over what it is that we hear.

When all our attention goes to our noise, there is no space for peace.  No space for receiving anything - wisdom, new ideas, love, anything.

We find ourselves clamouring more and more to be heard, when we are not paying attention to the part of us that does the hearing.  We become reliant upon others to be able to hear us.  And many of those others are struggling with their own noise.

We can be our own listener.  We can be our own peace.  Not by fighting the noise - that leads to trying to talk over it with new noise.  But by becoming aware of our listening part, by spending time in its company, by noticing when we get taken away from it and back into the noise, and by coming back to it, over and over again.

We can be our own peace.
